Rhyolite sprung up in 1905 after the discovery of gold in the area. The population rose to an estmated 10,000 to become one of the largest cities in Nevada, but by 1919 in was a ghost town. Rhyolite is located 4 miles west of the town of Beatty, Nevada on HWY 374. about 120 miles from Las Vegas.

Interesting place, supposedly the best ghost town to visit if you can only visit one, as there are many buildings still standing. Everyone says it can get crowded here but when I visited in July, not a soul was in sight. Perhaps it was due the 115 degree heat!
