I visit Hoover Dam on every visit to Vegas. It's a fascinating place and the peace and quiet makes you forget that there's another world out there. I go with Look Tours and 'Uncle George', a lovely man who knows his stuff, (although once I went on the Hoot and Hoover Comedy Tour which was also fab - Joanie was hilarious and very knowledgeable). Uncle George from Look Tours recognised me from another year so it shows how personal these tours are. I'd HIGHLY recommend it. While you're there take the tour out onto Lake Mead with the Desert Princess. It's definitely worth your while!

Hoover dam is probably a good attraction but avoid tripple j tours of it, I can say nothing good about them.We were on our honeymoon ,1st time in vagas, & trying to use our time best, so we booked the morning tour, the day before. Got called very early next day to tell us that tour was cancelled & we had to take an afternoon 1. So we had to rearrange our schedule. Next we were picked up in a bus that amounted to a rough riding nice school bus.We then made stops at EVERYhotel in town. We were then taken to a deserted mall & Sold UP to a bigger & better tour.We got on a nicer tour bus & almost immedately got caught in a traffic jam for a hour or so. TThen the bus broke down & we waited a hour or so while our driver went to a drug store & got transmission fluid for our bus. Then back to an hour so traffic jam again. Finally we got to the dam & were given our ticket to find out our upgradded tour was closed & of course NO REFUNDS. I have e mailed tripple j with our complaints & as to this writting have no reply or refund which should tell u a little about this company. Avoid them save your money time & vacation.

The tour was great $11.00. The Hoover Dam has just re-opened some of the tours that were closed because of 9/11. I've read other reviews saying that you only look at old non-operational equipment and that the tour was not worth taking, but they are way off of the mark. I saw all of the Nevada side generators in operation. (I have worked in substations a good part of my life) We also stood over the 30' intake pipes and more. A hint: pay for parking, it is only $7.00, and your car is in a parking garage, in the shade, not baking away in the direct sun light in 103 degrees of heat. Of course you can park for free in Arizona and come out to a vehicle you could fry an egg on your dashboard, it's up to you. Trust me pay the $7.00.

Hoover Dam is an engineering marvel of the 20th century. This is a must see if you are a history fan and if you would like to spend the day ouside of Las Vegas. Hoover Dam is amazing because it is hard to believe that this could have been made in the 1930's. If you see the Hoover Dam on tv it is nothing like it is in person. Just to see a structure this big holding back a river that forms and a man made lake is unbelievable. While you are there you should take the Hoover Dam Experience tour which is great to go down to see the power generators and see the dam up close and personal. Hoover Dam is a must go to and it is worth spending a couple hours at.

Tremendous in size and scope. A must see, but depending on your interests, the tour may not be necessary. However, I would recommend the tour, you get a sense of the history, and a great look at the interior turbines. Although you don't spend a real long time inside, maybe 10 minutes.

Gotta see this modern marvel at least once. Took our kids 12 & 7, mom-in-law, me and hubby. Did not take the tour; didn't want to bore the kids and waste $$. View the dam from top then visited the snack/souvenir shop. Total trip took us about 2-3 hours.

alot has changed since my first visit to the day in the early 90's
of course now with 9-11 the damn tour is shortened, and therefore
I question the 10 dollar entry fee
perhaps we are paying for the new parking structure.
Use to see alot more, exit out and look up, no more
I have read other reviews and agree, if you have been on the tour
before, pre 9-11, you feel ripped off.
thanks, it appears the terrorist have won.

Here's two hints: Park on the Arizona side, it's free. The Nevada side (closest to you as you come in from LV area) charges for parking, a total rip off. Next, don't pay any money to go down the dam, it's another rip off as all you'll see (thanks to Bush) is a bunch of display boards, a crappy video stream, and a quick look at some non-operating equipment. Instead, look at the dam from atop, take a few pictures, then go home and rent or watch a video on the building of the Hoover Dam. There you go, that's how you get your money's worth. The US government should be ashamed of itself for putting up such a tourist trap.

Thank you to raters for tips on parking and visitor center which we read before we went. Don't pay for parking unless you absolutely must have the covered parking and that's not guaranteed anyway once you've paid. Just take the steps down from free parking area from Arizona side. We were also put off by having to pay to get into the visitor's center. Best view is from the top of museum which you can't get to unless you pay- send 1 person through to get pictures from that vantage point. Otherwise awesome views by walking around at no charge. If they need to charge anything- they should only charge a flat fee toll per vehicle- not nickel and dime once you're there at the Dam. Highway 93 goes across DAM from Nevada to Arizona. VERY hot- take water!

Don't pay for parking!
The "visitor and information center" is a rip-off. Every park and monument has a FREE visitor center--thats how VISITORS get information and orientation. Here, they take you for parking, then they charge you another 10 bucks just to go into the visitor center/exhibits. For a family of four, thats around 50 bucks for what you can get for free just down the road at the park services Lake Mead visitor and information center, on the Nevada side. And for the hisory and exhibits--go the the Boulder City museum of Hoover Dam--free!
Over priced if you've paid for anything.
For what it's worth, drive up the hill to the Arizona side, park for free, walk down the stairs and over the dam in all of 30 minutes, look at the dam, take your pictures and say you've been there.

I have been on the Hoover Dam tour several times. This was my fourth visit and the first time for my wife. She was interested in seeing the whole tour. Unfortunately, things have changed since 9/11. They no longer offer the "Hard Hat" tour. Too bad. Now, you line up for an elevator to the turbines ... then go back up on a crowded elevator. It was not very well organized, and it was not obvious where you could go to view the movie about the building of the Hoover Dam.

Since this is a major government sponsored attraction, I would have expected a little more for the admission price.

I hope the tour eventually gets back to normal. The $5 for parking is still fine. One of the cheapest things you will do in Vegas.

There were many schools of fish worth watching in the lake.

Overall, the scenery is still beautiful. The dam is an engineering marvel. The tour is no longer worthwhile unless you have never been there before.

Well I'm glad we didn't pay the extra $10 each for the movie tour. We used the Vision bus tour for $19.99 each. On the way home the bus was too warm. Plus we had to wait about a half hour down at Lake Mead to pick up passengers who took the boat tour. Then the bus driver decides to stop at Ethel M's chocolate factory even though we all voted NOT to go there. The 5 hour trip turned into 6-1/2 hours, and then he dropped us off on the side of the Flamingo when we wanted to go to Caeser's. Obviously he didn't get a tip from us.

What a waste of a day!! Spent 6+ hours on this tour only to find out that for an extra $10, you got to see basically nothing that you couldnt for free. All we got for the extra fee was a short elevator ride and a quick look at the turbines after a short walk through a short tunnel. We didn't even have enough time to complete the so called "tour" that we had paid for. VERY disappointing. I did enjoy looking around and taking pictures of the breathtaking feat of technology, but I did feel a little mislead when we paid for the "tour". I wish I could remember the name of the tour company we took, it was so awfully run, I'd like a chance to publically bash them. I'd go again, but only to take pictures. And I'd also find a better run tour company--we ended up getting so frustrated that we got off the bus ASAP and just walked the rest of the way back to our hotel after over an hour of driving through what looked like crack-head infested neighborhoods dropping people off at various hotels. The very poorly run tour company didn't make our disappointing trip to the Hoover Dam any better.

Don't spend money for the dam tour. My wife and I took the tour several years ago and decided to bring the kids this time. What a waste of money. Go see the dam. It's a spectacular sight that pictures can't match. Walk across the dam, visit the gift shops. Don't pay/waste any money on the so called tour. All we got out of the experience was a hot stuffy elevator ride down to the base of the dam where we saw the electrical turbines. We didn't get to walk the tunnels or see the cooling pipes or anything. My advice to you is watch the movie, "Vegas Vacation" and watch the documentary of how the dam was built on the Discovery Channel if you want to see the dam from the inside. Then go walk across the dam for free and take lots of pictures. I'm sure the tour was restricted due to the *&%@#!$ terrorists!

Here's the way to see Hoover Dam for FREE...First, head out early...9 or 10am. Very little traffic (we went on a Saturday morning) Drive up and over the dam. Pass the paid parking on the left. Go to the first parking lot on the right (next to the Welcome to Arizona sign). Park there for FREE! Walk across the dam...take lots of pictures. Go into the Gift shop on the right, see the Native American exhibit and take more pictures. Go sit and listen to the live historian talk about the dam outdoors in front of the winged statues. Ask all the questions you want for free. Hop in your car and leave. This is for people who don't want the detailed tour but do want some information. We did this and spent $0 (except a little giftshop spending). We enjoyed it immensely.

It was unfortunate that we were unable to get the full tour of the dam, because of what happened Sept.11, 2001.
We were not impressed though, with paying full price for the tour and then being asked again for money to enter the Visitor Centre. They could have at least included that in the tour fee.
The Hoover Dam itselve was breathtaking.

An amazing sense of history and technology pervades this place. The exhibits before the tour, thank God, are not dumbed down for the masses, and the tour guides are knowledgable and engaging. Yes, it's pricey to see the dam, but the excellent manner in which the tours are conducted, and even how the parking garage (!) was constructed to blend into the surroundings and to match the 1930's architecture, speaks volumes of the pride that the people who work here have for the site.

I think visting the dam will only improve when the bypass is completed by 2007.

This is a must see if you've never been. We've been out twice, once by ourselves, once to take the kids.

The first time we took the bus tour. This is really the way to go. No worries about traffic, which can be very heavy, or narrow canyon roads with sharp turns. You also get a good narration of the history and what you're looking at as you drive by.

Taking the car is all right. There is a charge to park. Traffic can be heavy so it's best to go early. One advantage of taking the car is you can spend as much time as you want taking the tour, checking out the gift shop/snack bar, and going through the information center. The information center has a lot of exhibits, movie on the building of the dam, and an exhibit showing the nature of the desert. You don't have enough time to explore this while taking a bus tour.
