It has been a while since last I seen them, but the more things change, the more they stay the same. What has stayed the same is the quality--you come in looking for a good show,...you leave having seen one.

Let me preface my comments by saying that I have loved the Smos Bros since childhood. I went to the April 11 show at the Hilton. I also saw them about three years ago at Orleans. I thought their act was better then. I didn't think their performance started hitting the mark until, I'd say, about three-quarters of the way through--with the Quando Caliente el Sol tune. The film montage is great--provides some background for those who don't know their body of work and impact on contemporary America and late '60s era influence. Yo-yo man is always a delight. HOWEVER, Tom seemed like he was making stuff up as he was speaking (like the Hilton rant--it went nowhere). His trademark going-off-on-tangents and flubbing his way through made-up explanations of things was very tired, old, and just not funny. Plus, there is no hint of any edginess or political statement at all. Tom replying "Because I'm an American" when asked by Dick what gives him the right to lie could barely be referred to as political humor. They always did have a wonderful way of sliding pertinent remarks in with their otherwise innocuous brand of humor. I KNOW they can come up with some insightful and tastefully delivered quips that wouldn't necessarily upset certain audience members' political leanings.

I say all of this because I love the Smothers Brothers and I think they have it in them to do better. Perhaps someone within their organization reads reviews other than those printed in the papers and my comments will be passed along.
