Sheena Easton

Date Seen: 12/02 - Bad Show
LAS VEGAS HILTON - THE NIGHTCLUB - 12/12/02
1 1/2 stars (out of possible 5 stars)

Sheena Easton is a great artist. Her voice is nothing less than professional! During her heydays, she sang great songs like "Telefone", "Strut", and "Sugar Walls" to name a few. Many of her songs became top 40 hits in the 80s. Unfortunately, Sheena Easton in concert did not live up to expectations.

When entering the Las Vegas Hilton's Nightclub, ticket holders were introduced to the hits of the 80s. The sounds of "Our House" by Madness and "Whip It" by Devo became the base of what should have been an outstanding show. This introduction to The Nightclub kept my hopes up for a fabulous Sheena Easton concert!

The introduction to Sheena Easton on stage was a big disappointment. She started talking about why she looked the way that she looked, why she can not move around, and that she has children. She seemed very upset about herself. In turn, it gave a big let down to the concert and a sad feeling to what should of been a great concert.

A very "low self-esteemed" Sheena Easton performed about an hour and fifteen minutes. She continually referred to herself as being like Barbara Streisand. She even acted like her back hurt during her performance to "Strut"... a very sad look to an artist with a great voice!

During the concert, she only sang about four of her songs which were "Strut", "For Your Eyes Only", "Morning Train (Nine To Five)", and "Wind Beneath My Wings" in which she "brainwashed" the audience to remember that she was the songwriter to that song that Bette Midler made a hit.

Another big let down was that she shared about a half of the concert time to a
back-up singer with a raspy voice whose name that I will not mention due to the fact that it was a Sheena Easton concert and not "Sheena Easton and (blank) In Concert".
That back-up singer was very arrogant and pompous. I did not go there to hear him sing!

With the end of the very sad "wake-like" concert, Sheena would not autograph anything gesturing that the lights made it difficult to see what she was signing. A very disappointing ending to a very shockingly sad concert! It felt like going into a hospital and watching a loved one dying. Or even yet, looking at a loved one in a state of being a vegetable and remembering how she once was!

My opinion...
Do not go and see Sheena Easton in concert. Listen to your old records, CDs, and 45s. Even if you have her videos or the James Bond movie "For Your Eyes Only". Do that. Please do not get your memories shattered and go to see Sheena Easton in concert. It will be a very big disappointment!

Excellent show! The time went by so fast, it was hard to believe that I sat there for 75 minutes! Her voice is strong, clear and she sings with such emotion. She's performing next year (2003), but in the big showroom. I think Sheena should stick to the Nightclub's intimate setting where every seat is a good seat.

I saw Sheena's promo picture all over town...the one of her with her red hair, white pantsuit and glasses looking very sexy. I really didn't know if I wanted to see this show or not, but I figured "what the hell..." my curiosity got the best of me, so I went. The Night Club at the Hilton where she was playing was smaller than I expected, but still very nice and cozy. Well, Sheena looks nothing like that picture of her all over town! She now has long blond hair and has put on quite a few pounds, but then again, how many of us still have the body we had 20 years ago??? She even joked about getting older. She said, "yes, my ass is twice the size as before, but so what!" Hah! She wore a sequined gown that was too tight and she didn't look comfortable in. But, she can still sing!! She sang a mix of standards and her own hits. In all honesty though, she had quite a bit of trouble hitting those high notes that effortlessly came to her in her heyday. Her best songs of the night..."For Your Eyes Only", "Strut", "You're My hero". I liked her show and I really liked her backup singer Michelle Johnson - now there's a woman who deserves her own show!

Date Seen: 07/02 - Good Show
Sheena Easton is performing in the Las Vegas Hilton's "The Nightclub". It is cozy and intimate venue, with both a main floor, and balcony seating, with a bar at the back. There are probably no bad seats in the place. I was very fortunate, and got to slide into an unoccupied VIP table just a few feet from the front of the stage. The show started a few minutes after nine, Sheena appeared in a tight, shimmering gold gown, her hair brown, and shoulder length. She looked beautiful, so different from her boyish 80's look, which I was never crazy about. Her bare shoulders and arms were lean and without a hint of "flab", evidence that the lady works out. She was certainly energetic and ready to go, and had no problems quickly reaching the high end of her vocal range.

Sheena was backed by a seven-piece band, and singer Michelle Johnson. The sound was primarily pop, with the keyboards being predominant. The sax was usually the featured solo instrument, while the guitar basically played rhythm. Sheena aims to establish a rapport with the audience, poking fun at her life and career as a pop "chick singer". Explaining in a charming Scottish accent, how motherhood has changed her life from one of self-centeredness, to "the happiest time in her life". With her personal life well in order, Ms. Easton was more than ready to "strut", her still very well put together stuff, for an appreciative crowd. Here are the show's highlights.

The song selection was wide and varied, taking the audience through a range of emotions and moods. The touching and beautiful, "Almost Over You" is a real tearjerker. "Wind Beneath My Wings" is another powerful and emotional ballad. After you dry out your eyes, you can rock back to the mid 80's, watching Sheena shimmy and shake her behind, in a playfully version of "Strut". The star of the show, is more than willing to share the stage, as Sheena has an energetic duet with Michelle Johnson, covering "This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)". Tall and lean percussionist, Tony Davich, lends his soulful vocals to produce some of the shows' hottest numbers. Tony takes Kenny Rodgers' part on a version of "We've Got Tonight". The chemistry between Mr. Davich and Ms. Easton, is just fun to watch. Michelle joins Tony and Sheena for a version of "You've Got The Look" that has so much energy, that it puts the recorded version with Prince to shame.

Her 1993 "No Strings" album is a personal favorite (check it out), and Sheena performs a selection from it. Maybe someday she will record another collection of standards. The a cappella version of the Beatles "In My Life" has a bit too much reverb. And Sheena plays with her voice, twisting the notes just a little too much for my taste. But things get better, when everyone in the band takes part in a powerful a cappella rendition of CSN's "Our House".

The set finishes strong with "Morning Train" and "For Your Eyes Only". With each tune still sounding fresh some twenty years later. My only regret was that I was unable to meet the singer personally. Sheena Easton is a tiny lady, but a powerhouse performer on stage. The intimate setting is very comfortable, and band is right up in your face. The show could stand to be a bit longer, and include a few more songs from the different eras of her career. The price, is a bargain for Vegas, and should not be missed by anyone who is either an Easton fan, or one who appreciates a great singer who puts her heart into the music. You will have a very good time. Enjoy.

Sheena Easton obviously has aged like the rest of us, from the peak of her popularity in the '80s, but she still is as beautiful and talented as ever. We enjoyed the lounge type setting and intimate atmosphere. Our luck was holding and we had front row seats. Sheena has a sense of humor and shared a few personal experiences between numbers. Did you know that she was the original recording artist of "Wind Beneath My Wings"? Everyone always associates it with Bette Midler but it was Sheena's song. She also performed "Strut" and "For Your Eyes Only" which became classics. Her back-up group is marvelous in their own right. The show ran for an hour and a half but we felt like we sat there for 20 minutes. What a great show!

Sheena is still the best, if anything, her voice has improved with time. I have been to this show the last two years and was excited she had the same band this year as well.... they are fantastic! I enjoy hearing about her children and her life story. Sheena has a remarkable ability to bond with the audience. The show is fast-paced and never slows, trust me, at $30/ticket, this is the biggest bargain in Vegas.

My wife and I have seen more than twenty shows in Vegas, and we are comfortable to say that Sheena Easton is one of the very best. The show is performed at the Night Club, which can accommodate approximately two hundred people. Since the seating is on first come first serve basis rather than pre-assignment, my wife and I arrived at the Night Club thirty minutes before the show. We thought that we were early enough. However, seventy percents of the seats were occupied. So if you really want to have a great view, get there one hour before the performance. The front rows, though, are reserved for ?Invited Guests Only? (high rollers of the casino). Not only her voice is better than ever, Sheena is also humorous (for example, she said to the audience that ?you can see my assets have expanded,? referring that she has gained some weight compared to 80?s when she was the sex symbol. However, I would say that she is still extremely gorgeous). She sings many of her famous songs during the 75-minute performance. The climax is at the end of the show when she sings ?For Your Eyes Only.? Considering that the admission is only $30 per person, this is also the show that gives patrons the best value. Go see Sheena Easton, you will have a memorable night.

I was very excited to see, upon arriving in Vegas, that Sheena Easton. She put on an accessible show -- my reluctant female friend ended up really enjoying it. She played her classics ('Strut,' 'U Got the Look,' 'Morning Train,' 'We've Got Tonight,' 'For Your Eyes Only,' 'Lover In Me' -- sadly, no 'Telefone (Long Distance Love Affair)' nor 'Sugar Walls') mixed with standards and stories in between. I was convinced I'd get to meet her afterward if I stuck around, but I think she's got her car running in the back. TIP: I tipped the maitre'd $20 and my party of 2 got moved front and center. The couple with us tipped him $10 and got same treatment.

Sheena and I are the same age. I got old and fat. BUT WOW!! 43 years young and as beautiful as ever. And the voice!!! The show is in the Night Club at the Hilton and it is a very intimate room. Not a bad seat anywhere. We were lucky enough to be down front (get there early, no reserved seats) and were just thrilled with the show. Sheena sang some of her songs and songs that were important and/or touched her in some way. Her 8 piece band was phenominal. They all sang and played their butts off. At one point in the show they all joined Sheena for an acapella number that put the Mormon Taberbacle Choir to shame. A great show and well worth the money. Thank you Sheena and the Band for a great night's entertainment!

I wasn’t wild about spending an hour with Sheena Easton but was dragged by a few friends who wanted to see how the singer had changed since the 80’s.

Well she has filled out a tad but still looks good but what blowed me away was how the voice has changed and for the better.

Sheena did a few of her hits but it was her interpretation of other artists stuff that was the knockout. An hour went very quickly and she proved herself to be fine and even funny company. Not what I expected at all she is very underrated at $30 a ticket is a bargain. I hate to give a 10 but...

My husband and I really enjoyed this show, we were a little concered that our 16 yr old daughter would enjoy it but she did. In fact when we got home she was looking for more of Sheena Easton's music to play. This was a very nice intiment setting that made this very enjoyable. I would say this was a great show for the $.

After seeing Sheena Easton perform with David Cassidy at the Rio hotel, I said to my friend, "She deserves her own show, no doubt about it!" Well she got just that and her show whether you see her in the larger concert hall or in the nightclub at the Vegas Hilton, is certainly worth the ticket and wait.

East delivers a full set of atleast 10 songs during her show that are powerful and meaningful whether her original hits or her interpretation of others artists hits. She is also funny! That was what amazed me was how funny and witty she was. She has no problems talking to any audience and certainly leaves you wanting to hear her perform longer.

Check Sheena Easton out if you haven't seen her perform, you'll be glad you did!
