Date Visited: 12/03 - Good Visit I've visited the Spike many times, this was the first time staying a room. I had a standard king room. The room was barely adequate, motel 6 quality. Relatively clean but well worn. No shampoo. The diner is a great value. The service is good and the food is not bad for the money. I will be back for a good place to stay, good value on food and low limit blackjack. <earich -at- comcast.net> - USA - Added 01/28/04 - [68.55.22***] Report This Comment Date Visited: 12/03 - Good Visit The Staff was freindly, the slots -"great", the food ok, the rooms where fine and quiet, great location, but not ment for children, adults only and that's ok tired of tripping over kids 5 years of age and up, (reaching into your coin tray) etc... Won on the strip Big and I felt safe at the Gold Spike and with the locals there, plus the Security was great there when I won they made sure I made it too my room. The rooms I got for the winter specials where great (3nights and 4 days) W/2 rooms. I have been going there for a long time. 6 years and I will go again when things cool down from Sept. 11th. P.S. It's a small local casino and some people expect it to be like the major hotels, Looks, etc... "Not" If You want to be pampered go to a big hotel, other wise go to the gold spike if you want too see a friendly face. <babe_vegas50 -at- yahoo.com> - Hillside IL USA - Added 12/04/04 - [64.107.5***] Report This Comment Date Visited: 10/03 A good place, but not for everybody. Cheap bar drinks, cheap gambling. Two dollar blackjack, one deck (you get to handle the cards!). Kind of a dark, smelly casino, so if you are into the Strip type properties, stay away. If you want a good fun time, try this place. Lots of penny slots (and competetion for them), and a poker table. No craps. Good place to play poker without the pros taking your money. Lunatics abound, but they are harmless. A good place to talk to locals. Overall, if you want to experience the Old Vegas, this (and The Horseshoe) is about as close as you can get. <stubdoug -at- yahoo.com> - Atlanta GA USA - Added 10/09/03 - [64.63.211.***] Report This Comment Date Visited: 06/03 - Undecided The room is like a Motel 6, nothing fancy. What I kike is the casino. Blacjack is cheap, and so are the drinks. You have got to like the seedy side of life to enjoy this place. <dereckbc -at- yahoo.com> - Fort Smith AR USA - Added 06/19/03 - [171.75.208.***] Report This Comment Date Visited: 05/03 - Good Visit Visited on Memorial Day Weekend, so we stayed here because the rates are sky high anywhere else on Friday, Saturay and Sunday. The room was kind of beat up. Also, there's no cable tv. The neighborhood is a little seedy, but there's always security inside, and they patrol outside occasionally. On the plus side, rooms, food, beer and games all are incredibly cheap. The Spike, and the El Cortez are probably about as far off the beaten path of mainstream downtown that you would want to venture. Actually the El Cortez seemed a little rougher in the casino then the Spike plus it's a farther walk to Freemont Street. For the money, it's probably the best blend of value and acceptable risk downtown. <noyachtyet -at- yahoo.com> - USA - Added 06/02/03 - [65.174.193.***] Report This Comment Date Visited: 03/03 - Good Visit I will have to say that the Gold Spike was one of the highlights of my recent hotel-hopping adventure in Las Vegas. However, this is a special place for me, as it was the first place I drank in the great "Lost Wages." I think there are only two substantial complaints I could possibly have about the Spike: First, the well drinks at the bar are absurdly weak. Half the time, I couldn't detect the presence of alcohol in them. This problem is avoided if you order a drink they don't know how to make...these are served ridiculously stiff. Second, the food in the diner is absolutely wretched. Apart from these complaints (one of which can be avoided by ordering $1.25 draft beers at the bar), the Gold Spike is phenomenal. The rooms, while not as small as the rooms at the Ogden House, are quite well-appointed. The wire glass in the windows and bolted-down TV remote are part of the peculiar charm of this place, which is located close enough to Fremont and the downtown bus station to avoid making access a hassle, but not enough to create a distraction via noise and lights. The crowd here is absolutely wonderful. If you enjoy meeting interesting folks, hang out in the lounge at the Gold Spike...in one visit, we met a bunch of Vietnam veterans from Chicago and a drunken local impassionate about my marrying my lady friend. The video poker machines in the bar are far preferable to the kings-or-better machines found at the Western. The staff in the bar is exceptionally friendly. Overall, I'd say that the Gold Spike is the best value in Las Vegas, in spite of their inability to make a Mai Tai. The Gold Spike is undoubtedly the best possible room value for ANY establishment in Las Vegas with its own casino. <coatesdj -at- uchicago.edu> - Chicago IL USA - Added 04/22/03 - [66.73.169.***] Report This Comment Date Visited: 01/03 - Undecided Are you kidding me?I guess people dont have high expectations for themselves.Your on vacation, spend a few bucks and enjoy!!Whats with the incredible armpit stench? It was like being in boot camp tear gas chamber all over again. <citylife -at- optonline.net> - Bay Shore NY USA - Added 01/31/03 - [24.185.141.***] Report This Comment Date Visited: 06/02 The Spike is not for everyone. If you feel adventurous-- and winos, crack hos, and others of the great unwashed masses don't bother you-- the Spike could quite possibly be the coolest place in Vega$. Since I feel quite at home and fit right in with the above populations, I always enjoy my visits to the Spike. Where else can you play penny slots next to someone wearing a tin foil hat on their head? I was playing some VP next to a fella that was singing " Desperado" along with the Muzak. Unfortunately, the Muzak in the casino was playing " Safety Dance" by Men without Hats, but this dude just kept going " Deeeesssperaddddo, Deeeeeeeeessssssperadddddddooo " with occasional shouts of "DESPERADO !! " to the "Safety Dance". It was too funny !! So, if you have an open mind, truck on down to the Spike. If you get offended by bad smells and crazy people, stay away !! To those of us who relish and actually enjoy being around the stinky and the deranged, you might just think you died and went to heaven. You may want to bring your beverage. I only saw one waitress. I went to the bar and ordered a drink, left the girl a $2.00 tip. I thought she was going to cry. <revoluti0n9 -at- yahoo.com> - USA - Added 08/26/02 - [172.140.71***] Report This Comment Date Visited: 04/02 The Gold Spike is very nasty and very cool at the same time. The smell of urine and stale cigarette will greet you when you enter the Gold Spike casino. $2.00 blackjack tables and 75 cent drinks are o'plenty at the Gold Spike. There is almost no waitress service at the Gold Spike, so you'll have to get up and get your own drinks. If your downtown, and looking for a cheap place to gamble, don't have your girl with you (she will hate it unless she's super cool), check out the Gold Spike. <goffsroad -at- yahoo.com> - Goffs CA USA - Added 04/09/02 - [66.27.145.***] Report This Comment Date Visited: 04/02 - Good Visit The Spike is not for everybody but it my new favorite place to stay in Vegas. i booked a regular room on their web sight but was able to upgrade to a corner suite for $36.00 a nite!!.The room was clean housekeeping was prompt and the balcony was great. The casino does have a "unique" smell to it but the folks are friendly and I had a great time on the Blackjack tables ($2.00 limit)dealers are very nice.If you are picky this is not for you but a "low roller" will think this place is great. <willwood11 -at- lvtalk.com> - Long Beacn CA USA - Added 04/21/03 - [12.29.104***] Report This Comment Date Visited: 03/02 - Good Visit We have visited the Gold Spike 2 times. The first time was during June 2001,and we really enjoied it. This was our first time to ever visit Las Vegas. The housekeeping lady was very nice, as was most of the staff here. (except the ladies in the cafe, which were rather RUDE.) The room was VERY clean and comfy. The Casino was a neat place too, but it was the first one we had ever been in before. The prices for the rooms were AWESOME. We loved being so close to Fremont Street too. For our first visit to Vegas, it was fun, and we got married while we were there. Our 2nd trip to Vegas was over springbreak 2002. This time we took the kids. Vegas does have lots of things for kids to do, but as for the Gold Spike, it is not very "Kid friendly". The service and everything were just as it was on our 1st visit, including the ladies in the cafe. Once again, we enjoied our stay here. But we will not be taking the kids back with us. The Gold Spike is not a bad pplace to stay while in Vegas, and for the money, it was great. We WILL be going back to Las Vegas, and YES we WILL be staying at the Gold Spike. <tbpigs -at- aol.com> - Lubbock TX USA - Added 06/08/02 - [198.81.17.***] Report This Comment Date Visited: 03/02 - Good Visit If you want fancy rooms and decor don't bother but if you want excellent value on a budget do. I first came here in 2000 and wanted somewhere cheap and had no problem coming back here. If you think how little time you spend in your room whilst on vacation you see the sense in staying in this kind of place. Colourful locals usually mean drunks and whilst we were two ladies travelling by ourselves never felt threatened in any way. <ondine_ur -at- yahoo.com> - Stoke On Trent UK - Added 07/11/02 - [62.6.253.***] Report This Comment Date Visited: 01/02 - Good Visit The venerable Gold Spike Hotel & Casino. You either love or hate this place, there's just no two ways about it. Those of us who LOVE this place have reached cult proportions, and would prefer to keep it as our little secret, but I'll share some nuggets with you. The Gold Spike is located directly behind the soon to open "Neon-opolis Movie Theatre and Museum." Once inside, you'll meet alot of "colorful locals," value-oriented tourists from the USA, as well as some Europeans. (No, you haven't walked into the Cantina Bar from Star Wars.) My wife and I recently played a "Mr Lucky" machine with a talkative bunch from Sydney. The rooms (recently increased in price) begin at $ 25.00 for a standard room, and goes up another 10 to 15 bucks, depending on day of week for a roof top suite, with sliding glass door, and access to a lovely balcony. This has to be the bargain of the millennium. Believe me- all of the guest rooms are much nicer than either the neighborhood or the public spaces would suggest. Drinks now begin at 75 cents (up from 50 cents.) The small coffee shop serves adequate food at a bargain. Free breakfast (or a two-fer for lunch or dinner) is included with each room. Breakfast includes two eggs, toast, hash browns and bacon on a plastic plate. Coffee is extra. If the waitress is swamped, a kind word and smile may preempt attitude. A surprisingly good roast beef dinner is only $ 2.50. Have a snack when you return to your room for a song. Play totally free bingo each morning from 6:30 AM to 9:30 AM. There is a daily drawing for prizes ranging from shirts, jackets, dinner for two at Roberta's (at El Cortez,) and CASH. Parking is free in the small lot directly behind and on the Las Vegas Boulevard side. Sometimes if the lot was full, we've parked at El Cortez and walked back. There is a great group of people (misfits) who sponsor a yearly soiree here at the Gold Spike. No expense is spared! If you time your trip right, you'll get to meet "Stinky" and his friends. Anyway- if you're amenable to a very different casino experience-you'll have an unforgettable time here at the Gold Spike. <tonyraisins -at- yahoo.com> - Bronx NY USA - Added 01/03/02 - [172.180.133.***] Report This Comment Date Visited: 00/00 - Good Visit I didn'y stay at the Gold Spike but did visit during my last trip in June, 2003. The casino is small and stuffy and has its share of harmless characters, but I had a lot of fun playing and hanging out there. Played two dollar blackjack for about two hours on $20.00 and enjoyed the interaction with our dealer as well as various other denizens of Downtown. I tipped the cocktail waitress a buck or two each time she came by and she seemed pretty happy. Did the same with the bartender and he was very appreciative (didn't look like too many big tippers in the crowd). Other staff and patrons I came in contact with were all friendly. It's probably not for everybody but it's a fun place to hang. I'll definatly stop in on my next trip. <dfa8749521 -at- aol.com> - USA - Added 06/23/03 - [66.134.76.***] Report This Comment You must judge the truthfulness of any comment and accept responsibility for your use of this information.
