NOTE:

Vacation Village CLOSED on January 8, 2002.

The hotel and casino was recently sold to a new owner for $ 17.5 million.

It closed, unexpectedly.

The new owners of this property have building height limitations, owing to the proximity to the airport.

The hotel was basically value-oriented. They recently tried a number of innovations including an "Outer Space Bar" on the 2nd floor, a resumed buffet, a cleaned up "Koo-Koo's Lounge" with better entertainment. The Mexican Food in the little taco-shop was surprisingly good. Denny's had a restaurant in the center of the casino. They were known for a terrific promotion- new visitors could spin a wheel for cash prizes up to the value of their airplane ticket. At one time, this promotion also included car rentals. The entire ceiling of the casino was recently cleaned-up. Location was far from strip at one time, but the strip kept creeping closer. Convenient Strip Bus stopped at door. Pool area was clean, and nicely landscaped. "Marie" at the promotions window was the embodiment of hospitality.

Good-bye Vacation Village.

The future plans for this property are unknown.

Vacation Village

I took my first vacation to Las Vegas in August of 2001. Being the frugal type I searched all over for a deal on my hotel lodgings and found a gem with Hotel Reservations Network and the “unfortunately” now closed Vacation Village Hotel and Casino. I was able to reserve a room for my first 3 nights in Las Vegas at the low low rate of only 25.00 a night plus 3.00 energy charge since Las Vegas was having an energy crisis during that summer. With hotel reservations network I was able to get a 20.00 rebate on my 3 day stay bringing my total for 3 night’s accommodations from 75.00 to 55.00 for 3 days.

I arrived in Las Vegas on a Monday so it wasn’t very crowded when it came time to check in. I walked right up to the reservations counter and checked in and got my room key as well as my free coupons for the casino. This particular hotel I stayed at had a jewel of a promotion that would get plenty of people to at least drop by the casino. If you visited the promotion booth within 12 hours of arriving in Las Vegas and showed them your airplane ticket, they would give you a free spin on their Big Six wheel where you could when anywhere between 1 dollar up to half your airfare or a free 3 day vacation with their hotel.

As soon as I got my key it was off to that promotions book for the big spin I had been reading and dreaming about. Imagine the casino might pay for half your airfare there or home whichever way you want to think about it, just by stopping by their casino and taking a chance on their wheel, and at no cost to you.
I spun the wheel. Wouldn’t you know it, I passed the half your airfare home spot by 1 peg of the wheel. Everyone at the casino was ecstatic when they thought I had won but mean old Mr. Unlucky had sprung his frowning face upon me and pushed the wheel just far enough to make it go 1 peg past. I won a whole $2.00 but hey, it was $2.00 I didn’t have before I arrived.

As for the hotel itself, It was typical to what you would encounter if you were staying at a holiday inn or a days inn. 4 buildings with 2 floors each. The accommodations were as such as well except I had reserved a king size bed. They had 3 restraunts and they were Denny’s, Roberto’s Taco Stand, and a snack bar I believe it was called koo koos. I was particularly impressed with their pool as it didn’t seem to have any hours posted and sure enough you could swim in 1 of 2 swimming pools or get in their Jacuzzi 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

I played a lot in the casino but I should of refrained until going to another casino with a slot club as vacation villages slot club was nonexistent if they even had one. I must have put in a couple hundred dollars into their slots and didn’t get anything extra for it. I went to the stratosphere and put in $50.00 into their nickel machines and got an offer in the mail for 4 free nights Sun - Thurs or Friday and Saturday plus entry for 2 into the stratosphere tower.

Now that I’ve read Jean Scotts “The Frugal Gambler” I know how to make the most of my next trip to Vegas which I plan to take sometime before November when my free nights at the stratosphere expire.

It’s sad to know the next time I go to Vegas I won’t be able to stay at or drop by Vacation Village to take advantage of their big wheel promotion. Whoever reopens the casino (I’ve been told it has been slated to become a holiday inn for years by some of the locals) I hope they bring back this one of a kind promotion that made Las Vegas all that more special.
