I used to stay at Gold Spike some years ago as they would send me free room vouchers in the mail
The last time I was in a room it was during a hot time of the year and we had the wall air conditioner running when we went to bed. About two hours later I woke up in a sweat and went over to see what had happened to the A/C. It was not running when I got out of bed but started as soon as I walked toward it.
Great, I went back to bed and the room cooled down.
An hour later I was sweating again, started to head to the A/C and it came on. Ah-Ha, I figured it out. They had installed a motion detector in the power line so the A/C would kick off after a short time if there was not any movement in the room.
I was so pissed off that I put on a shoe and went over and kicked the detector off the wall.
There was no way to by-pass it so I rigged it to blow the curtains and keep it activated all night.
In the morning we shoved it back into the hole and left, never stayed there again but have been back to play 21 and drink cheap beers. Of course, the 21 tables are gone and the beer is now one doller for a Coors light, no other brand an draught.
The smoke level seemed to be way down from the old days but we did not hang around long, the bums are all still there.

I just got back from a trip to the spike. 3/21-3/27 I have to admit the spike has gone downhill. No more $2.00 BJ and no more infamous "copper mine". I'm very disappointed in the casino. Now the hotel on the other hand is the same. A great value for the money. I will continue to stay here.

Yes. I have stayed here many times. Yes I will continue to stay here because the rooms are the best value for your money anywhere in las vegas. Yes, The casino is dirty,cramped, and not everyones cup of tea. But the rooms are on par or better than days inn/motel 6 and their top floor suites are an absolute steal. I am staying here again in 5 days. for 1 week. I admit this casino is not for everyone but the rooms are a real bargain hunters paradise.

wow, what a wonderfully scarry place. i like that "will i live to tell about" feel. drinks are cheep. that's why the place if filled with bums. while using the restroom, "dont try the egg salad", was yelled from one of the 2 stalls. i didnt.

ohh the old Gold Spike....The nasty,stinky and always homeless filled Gold Spike....This place sucks not even the alure of the Infamous Copper Mine would tempt me to ever step foot in you're clutches again...Let me give you a quick rundown of the spike. This place smells of urine and stale cigarete smoke the bathrooms were as bad as I have ever seen and a Homeless man exposed himself to me well I was using them and then smiled at me. I hit a royal flush on penny video poker and it took about a half hour to get my money a whole whopping ten dollars......they no longer have table games wich I thought was the olny redeming quality of the gold spike before because you could play 2 dollar black jack and I am a low roller.....In all olny visit the gold spike if you are brave and dont take you're woman there because she will want to leave instantly. I have been in every casino in Las Vegas and this one is the worst so you have to at least check it out if you're downtown so you can say I went to the Gold Spike and survived.............

We stayed at the gold spike on 9/14/06, the people at the front desk were very,very slow and rude and there were no comps and the prices went up. The rooms were filthy and there were roaches and no cable and no remote to the tv in the room. The casino was also filthy and the smell of smoke was horrible. The food was very bad too. I will never stay there again.

This place is actually worse that noted here. It exceeds its seedy reputation.
It is not is not a safe place even at high noon.
Definitely not a place to take someone you care about.

GREAT VISIT, I REALLY LOVE THIS OLD PLACE, ITS NO GOLDEN NUGGET, BUT IT WAS GOOD. THE DESK CLERK WAS COOL. KINDA OF SLOW BUT HEY THATS OK. ROOM WAS OK SINCE YOU ONLY SLEEP FOR ABOUT 4 HOURS A NIGHT. LOCATION IS OK. I WOULD NOT SUGGEST THIS PALACE TO ANY SINGLE LADIES BUT ITS FINE FOR ANY ONE IN A GROUP OF PEOPLE WITH MEN. I PLAN TO VISIT THIS PLACE AGAIN FOR LABOR DAY. AND BY THE WAY THEY HAVE THE BEST MAIDS IN ANY HOTEL ON THE STRIP. LOVE THE MAIDS

Just a casino visit to see if it was as bad as the ratings. YES...............
From the moment I saw the drunk sleeping on the street I knew that there were no homeless in Vegas. They have a home here. When I drove up my wife said "your not going to go in there?" I replied "then you are staying in the care alone?" She was on my arm like gorilla glue. Dirty place. Smelled of stale beer and pee. The machines were old and run down. The people looked scary but we had no trouble. Didn't drop a dime there. Why would I want their comps. shudder......
Went quickly back to the Orleans my need for adventure satisfied.

They took out the blackjack tables, not just the $2 tables, but all of them and filled them in with more slots. Why would someone play in place that's slots only, but doesn't have a slot club.
I think they stopped cleaning the place period, if you think it was bad a couple of years ago, don't even think about it now. At least they used to spray alot of air freshener to try and hide the smell, but they don't even bother these days, the smell of B.O. and urine almost knocks you down. I'd rather poop my pants than use the bathroom in this joint.
I used to like to play cheap BJ and get loaded at the Spike, but no more. Don't even bother going in. If they think pulling the table games(the only redeeming quality of the place) and decreasing the small amount of housekeeping the used to do would increase business they should reconsider.

The Casino area and bar area were 50% clean and full of smoke. The restaurant was extremely unorganized, lost my order ticket and was rude when I questioned the whereabouts of my food. The rooms were filthy, the carpets were extremely dirty and it also had "COCKROACHES". In the middle of the night the fire alarm was accidently tricked and we were all ordered out of the rooms for nothing in the middle of the night. It's cheap and in a good location but you might not be able to afford the cost it takes to get rid of the cockroaches if you end up taking any of those stubborn little critters home with you.

WE BOOKED OUR RESERVATIONS THROUGH HOTELS.COM FOR OUR FAMILY REUNION IN VEGAS. SO, THEY BOOKED US AT THE GOLD SPIKE. WHEN WE GOT THERE, WE DIDN'T EVEN WANT TO GO INSIDE. WE WERE ALL SHOCKED AND DIDN'T WANT OUR CHILDREN IN A DUMP LIKE THIS. BUT, WE WERE VERY TIRED FROM DRIVING ALL DAY. WE ENDED UP STAYING THERE, SINCE WE BOOKED IT. THE ROOMS WERE VERY DISGUSTING AND THE ODOR WAS AS BAD AS A NURSING HOME. THE DINING AREA WAS FILLED WITH BUMS. I WOULDN'T WISH ANYONE TO STAY THERE. THEY NEED TO TEAR IT DOWN AND RE-BUILD. THE SHOWERS DIDN'T HAVE HOT WATER, THE A/C WASN'T WORKING PROPERLY IN SOME ROOMS. HOLES IN THE WALLS. IT WAS A VERY BAD EXPERIENCE FOR MY FAMILY. WE WOULD NEVER EVER VISIT THERE AGAIN, EVEN IF IT WAS THE LAST HOTEL STANDING IN VEGAS.

i stay at the nugget or fitz,but no trip is complete without a vistit to the SPIKE. upon arriving a nice crackhead screamed something from across the street.but you gotta expect this in any downtown area, hell that's the charm of freemont st. the place is a little seedy,but i saw no blood on the floor,so i headed right to the 2 dollar blackjack table. very friendly dealers,who made me feel good even when i lost,which wasn't the often. as amatter of fact i won 10 out of the last 13 hands,and tripled my money. i might even consider staying here my next vist. if you think the spike is bad try the western or klondike inn. all three rate about the same,well maybe the western is the worst. BACK AT THE SPIKE won big on a slot and received the free dinner comp.DO NOT EAT HERE. OMG. took two bites and that was it.casino is always fun.never saw so many people talking to themselves.lol. had a blast as always

DID NOT STAY HERE JUST VISITED, BUT I WAS NOT BOTHERED BY ANYONE NOR DID I ENCOUNTER ANY BAD PEOPLE WALKING TO OR FROM HERE. LUCKY I GUESS. ALTHOUGH, THE NEXT DAY, I WAS LEAVING THE LADY LUCK TO GO TO THE GOLD SPIKE AND WAS TOLD NO ONE COULD ENTER UNTIL IT WAS DECLARED SAFE BECAUSE OF AN ELECTRICAL FIRE THAT HAD HAPPENED IN THE EARLY MORNING. I WANTED TO PLAY THE PENNIE MACHINES, SO I'LL HAVE TO SAVE MY PENNIES UNTIL NEXT VISIT TO LAS VEGAS.

When I went to the website that I used to book my reserve my room at the Gold Spike, it made me think that I would be renting the standard Motel 6ish room for a VERY cheap Las Vegas rate. What I saw when I got there, was different.
Upon entering the main entry, I was hit with what I would come to know as the stale "urinicopit" odor. I was greeted by colorful people with anywhere between 3 and ten total teeth in their dentition. Some of them smelled of B.O., some of urine, many of alcohol and quite a few smelled of all three. As wild and cock-eyed as they may have been, they were harmless. Who needs Circus Circus when you can see this freak show for free?
Moving past them, I got to the front desk to be greeted by Paul. He was the ONLY friendly front desk person. He checked me in, gave me my keys and my comps.(I chose breakfast but don't recommend it!) My room was common. It looked not like the Motel 6 but like the motel in the crack area of town run by folks native to India. It was basically clean, smelled of smoke, had a TV with no cable and a tiny yet clean bathroom. I gave myself a moment to settle and decided that I felt safe but would never bring my son here or anyone that I was trying to impress.
I went back down to the Casino. I scanned the local life and everyone had a sad tale of woe and misery. I could only wonder if anyone had a job that had Dental Insurance as a benefit. After no one tried to cut me or snatch my pocket book, I knew that I was okay there.
The proximaty to the Strip was excellent in my opinion. I could take Industrial and any other back street to get to the Strip without the inconvenience of Strip traffic. One night I even walked without incident of robbery, molestation, nor pan-handling. I'd go again.
I wouldn't gamble there. It's far too smokey for my liking and I can only take so much willing sharing of personal tragedy and butchering of classic songs backed by Musack!

This place is the worst place I have ever stayed in and I would never tell anyone anything good about it. I took my sister who has cancer to this place and it was such a bad experince for both of us. We witnessed 4 drug deals 2 acts of prostitution 3 inside fights and that is just in the first 6 hours of our stay. I think they should shut this place down it is not even worth 50 cents you had to pay for your drinks if you could even get one. WE were hit on so many times we had to go up to our room because we were scared. Don`t book it the food is horrible.

If you order something in their diner, you have to pay up front because they think you're going to eat without paying. I did so then went to their men's room to wash my hands. Big mistake. It was the filthiest, most stinking toilet I've ever seen! The Health Department ought to shut this place down, although in retrospect it already looked like it was standing by to be imploded. I exited the place without eating! The only reason I went into the Gold Spike in downtown Las Vegas is because I thought it was operated by the same people who run the Gold Spike Hotel & Casino near Lake Mead. It isn't. Don't go there unless you want to get sick.

Didn't stay here, but have gambled here. This is the best place to play blackjack...low
limit tables and a really colorful atmosphere! locals play here! Free bingo in the am if you
are at a table...so you can play bingo and blackjack at the same time. The penny slots
are a hoot. The service for drinks is painfully slow, but the drinks are pretty good if you
can get one.
I think anyone that stays here with children should be shot, as the smoke levels are kind
of sickening. Kids do not belong at the gold spike!

i did not stay at the gold spike but i did visit there. i played blackjack and loved the low limit tables, although there were only 2. i also enjoyed the free bingo, however i would not recommend going there alone as i did. there was a problem with one of the patrons as i was leaving and security was right there but it left me a little scared as i was leaving the casino. would never go there late at night

Very happy with this hotel. I only stayed one night and had visited it on a previous trip so knew sort of what to expect. Don't come here if you want glitzy Las Vegas or to impress a partner - this is old style pre-glamour Las Vegas - a typical Gambling Hall if you will. What I didn't expect were such decent rooms, very well kept, although basic but very tasteful. It was a very busy weekend in Vegas and I didn't want to spend upwards of $200 for a place which I had previously stayed at for $70 - but my $32 here was well spent.
The casino may alarm some, it's very smoky - despite the "Air has been purified for you convienience" notice that raised a smile, and very lively but a lot of cheap fun. Tip the waitress and she'll return again and again, although it may take a little time to begin with for her to "notice" you. I chose to eat elsewhere as the coffee shop area was always busy, and I was slightly intimidated being a sober englishman in the jolly saturday afternoon surroundings - but if you win a $50 jackpot you get a free meal (I'll use my voucher next time). The staff were very friendly and helpful but don't expect them to carry your bags!
No complaints - I love the old style LV.

We stayed here from 2/20-2/24, and I have to say that the suites are a steal at $38 a night, even on the weekends. We stayed in the 2 room, 2 bed suites, and found we actually had more room than we needed. Living room had a small, useless table with three chairs, a couch with a fold out bed, a desk and a small TV on a stand. The remote was supposed to be locked to the end table, but the lock was broken, and the remote didn't work either. The bedrooms resembled a typical motel 6 layout with the exception of small refrigerators in each room. Nice touch. Each suite also has a small balcony that sounds cool, but is pretty much useless as well. That's the good stuff. Now for the bad.
We were on a tight budget, so we originally planned to stay at our favorite, the El Cortez, but found this property was owned by the same people ans had cheap suites. People weren't kidding when they wrote that this place was dark and full of smoke. I gave my two year a kiss on the head 5 minutes after we checked in, and she already had the smoke smell stuck in her hair. The staff was nicer than I had expected, and the check-in process was pretty effortless. What really surprised me about this hotel was that they had a total of 4 BJ tables, and we only saw three of them running all of the days we were there, even on Friday and Saturday. The fourth table apparently served as the dealer's break station. They were actually eating lunch on the felt. Didn't even try to gamble here, so I can't rate that.
The worst thing about this property is its location. We were approached by 5 beggers in 4 days, and never felt totally safe walking from our car to our room anytime of the day. We felt a million times safer at the El, probably because of their parking garage. The free breakfast or two for 1 dinner deals are a joke because the food is inedible.
Stay at the El Cortez. The rooms are a little more expensive, but they are far more worth it in the long run.

Stayed at the Spike for the $38 "penthouse" rooms. They were really huge and quite nice considering the casino downstairs. The Casino was busy with the typical Spike crowd and the odour was worse than ever of stale beer and urine. However it was the best value in the city and worth a trip if not just to see what we'll all look like once gambling reduces us to the like of the Spike's clientelle.

Casino was dark, smokey and a bit dirty. Yet, I didn't fill bad about it. Cheap gambling, and a fun group of people in the casino. The room was clean and the bathroom. Bathroom was small, but clean. The only trouble was with the beds. To soft for me. Prefer my beds a little firm. Still, o.k.
