think the board of health closed the hotel. i know they cant rent the rooms out anymore.the machines are cash in and handpay out. no tickets,only handpay. its very weird.this place is a dump.I LOVE IT!!!!

We stayed at the Golden Nugget and after reading various comments about the Western being such a dump and dangerous to walk to we weren't going to visit it. Are we glad we did. We went in the morning when it wasn't busy and loved the $3 Black Jack that paid 3:2 without a crowd,the old nickel slots and video poker(the Nuggets tables were $10 minimum except for a table for a few hours which was usually full, and no nickel slots) The wood floors were polished to a shine, service for cocktail was excellent. Tables are a worn but that didn't bother me or my wife. Yea there are some weird locals but they weren't hard to avoid or ignore. While I can afford the $10 games its just more relaxing without the crowd on $3 tables. The other casinos advertised $3 dollar tables but rarely could we find any openings at them. When we head to Vegas again the Western will be on our list of casinos to visit. We may bring some roundup(weed killer) along to spray the weeds along the fence on the walk there!(hint hint)

I dont know what all the fuss is about the Western is not as bad as people make it sound on here. the table games are cheap like quarter roulette and three dollar black jack. The drinks are cheap nothing over three dollars even the top shelf stuff..... now the area it is in a little on the scary side but I made the walk about ten differnt times and had no problems at all the drug dealers were very polite when they aproached me and asked me if I would like to buy some crack and when I said no they left me alone...in all the western was a decent casino to visit well on my week long stay in vegas but I would not stay at the hotel.......

I made reservations weeks in advance at the WESTERN only because the entire city was 'sold out' due to a major convention and spring break. Upon check-in, an untrained clerk tried to assist me, but a friendly supervisor arrived to help her at this busy time. My reservations were messed up, so I was overcharged on my credit card... That was taken care of, but then I went to my room. The door looked like it had been broken into many times and I could see daylight where it had been pried open with a crowbar... The TV didn't work, the toilet didn't flush and the bed was broken down, so I went back to the front desk to ask for another room or a refund. They sent me to the AMBASSADOR EAST Motel across the street for the same price. The room there was a good value for $27 a night, considering it may have been the last room in town. I'll never be so desparate as to stay at the WESTERN. I know the casino is a dive, and it attracts all the locals who have been 86'd from everyplace else, but that's the charm of it all. I must admit the employees are some of the friendliest in Las Vegas. ONLY visit the casino and Never stay in the hotel! Oh, one word to Barrick Gaming Corp: MAINTENANCE.

What the hell can I say about this place?? If you like dumps or seedy joints this is the place for you. I have always wanted to walk down to the Western during one of my stays in downtown Las Vegas but never got around to it. Last week I was in Vegas for a three day seminar and decided to drag a coworker down to the Western for a peek. While walking the 5 or so blocks from Las Vegas Blvd I noticed a couple of real nasty bums stumbling around with a couple of BIG ASS beers. During the walk to the Western I wondered just where a man could acquire such a large, tasty beverage….I found out once I entered the front doors of the Western. Upon entering the Western (or “West Hot� as glossed by me and my coworkers due to the half burned out neon sign) I observed on my left a large horseshoe shaped bar packed with many sots slurping 40 oz draws. Needing to quench my thirst from the trek through the “hood� I bellied up to the bar and ordered myself a BIG ASS draw beer. The bartender asked what flavor and advised that the Coors was $2 and all the rest was $3. After hearing the low price I immediately knew that my drunk ass was in trouble.



We spent about 3 hours at the Western enjoying cheap BIG ASS beers and playing $3 Royal Match BJ. The casino was simple but was a blast all the same. There were several BJ tables, a roulette wheel, and a bunch of machines. The dealers were friendly, the patrons were fun to watch, and the overall ambiance was awesome. The felt on the tables was faded and stained. The floors were swept but the men’s room was in need of a janitor’s attention. Two of the stools were overflowing with sour dung and one urinal housed a load of fresh barf. I did not stay in the hotel but on my next trip I’m going to have to stay at least one night.



During our trip we walked down to the “West Hot� on three different occasions. We were in a group of 6 when we made the walk during the night so we felt somewhat safe. However, I would not recommend making the walk at night if alone.



If you like seedy joints and seedy people this is the place in Vegas to visit. The Western puts the Gold Spike to shame when it comes to dives!!

yeah it's a dump,but so what. i stay at the nugget,but i always walk down to the western. yes even in the middle of the night. i've never had any trouble on my way to and from the casino,and have never had any trouble once inside.would i let a g-friend make the trip alone? NO. a vacation is about trying new and different things,and THE WESTERN is certainly different.don't a afraid check it out.

I found a good rate for 30$ a night here, and for a 3 night stay I figured it would be worth saving the money to put to some other use. Boy, was I in for it. To this day I have nicknamed this place "The Cigar." Cigarette smoke lingers around the room 24/7. If I had stayed in the casino any longer than 10 minutes, im sure I would have ended up with cancer. Once I got to my room which was supposed to be non-smoking, still had a rank smell of raunchy tobacco. It was like being in a terrible 80's horror film. The wall paper was peeling in multiple places. Our mirror was cracked, the tv didn't work, and the worst is yet to come. When we ran our water, the faucet pulsated a horrible brown liquid which I swear wasn't water. I know for a fact that our toilet had not been used for awhile, because there was remnants of human feces still remaining in there when we opened the lid. We immediately called the front desk and demanded we talked to a manager. The front desk had a very poor attitude and claimed that there wasn't a manager on shift at this time.

As for the casino, if you were a drunk and maybe had one dollar in your entire bank account, this is the place for you. Cheap beer and 1cent slots. I would have paid the 30$ i spent for one night to have them set out a bed in their parking lot, atleast the air would have been fresh. I didn't want to ask for a refund for the other 2 nights, im sure they could use that money to buy some air filters. Do not stay here.

This place sits near the I-15 on-and-off ramps. It's the kind of place you want to check out on your way home --that is, if you have any money left. Eat one of their hamburgers with fries; they're better than anything you'll find between Vegas and San Diego. The bad thing about this place is that you have to call an attendant to redeem whatever you win and this procecdure takes some time. The Western also features one of the lousiest Cashier's Boxes in Nevada: It doesn't even have an Employee's Window! Keep your eyes open going to and from your car. The elements hovering on their motel balcony look like they're sizing up potential victims.

After reading about the Western on this website and some others, I had to check out this place on my last visit to Vegas. To my surprise its not that bad. Its the only place in town that has $1 minimum bet on roulette. Yes, the place is full of strange people but nobody bothered me. I only went their in the daytime and it is in somewhat of the bad area of downtown
